What do you gain when you take a performance beyond a stage?

Platform: Various
Methods: Qualitative Research
Project Type: Entertainment
Responsibilities: User Research, Project Management
Background: Immersive theater doesn’t feature a proscenium stage.
Action: As a Stage Manager and member of the production team I helped bring creative visions to life and solve logistical problems on the Gowanus Canal, in a recreational vehicle, in a geodesic dome, in a maze of interconnecting websites and Zoom meetings, among other unlikely settings. For projects like Flock, the giants, and Alice in the Holodeck, I also helped manage user experience design and onboarding audience members with immersive technologies like projections, untethered VR, and multiuser VR. As a researcher, I designed surveys, observation protocols, and interviews; collected and analyzed data; and reported on the pieces’ impact on audiences.
Result: Many strange and beautiful shows went on.
